New Year’s Food Traditions from Around the World

Do you have a favorite New Year’s tradition you follow every year? Share a kiss with someone special. Eat a particular meal. Toast with champagne. Here are five food related New Year’s traditions we think are pretty fun.

  1. 1) In Greece, families are known to bake a vasilopita, New Year’s Day cake that has a coin hidden inside. The cake is cut into at midnight and the person that finds the coin in their slice is said to have good luck in the new year.
  2. 2) In Japan, families eat soba noodles, or toshikoshi soba, at midnight on New Year’s Eve to bid farewell to the previous year and welcome in the new year. The tradition is said to have begun in the 17th century. The long length of the noodles is said to symbolize longevity and prosperity.
  3. 3) In Germany, a long-standing tradition is to eat sauerkraut and pork on New Year’s Eve. Many Germans believe that eating pork and sauerkraut will bring good luck and wealth in the new year.
  4. 4) In Spain, there is a tradition of eating 12 grapes during the 12 strokes of midnight. The grapes are said to welcome in good fortune and success for the New Year.
  5. 5) In the Southern United States, black-eyed peas are served on a bed of collard greens are a customary dish for a New Year’s supper. The two foods served together are said to represent prosperity and wealth for the coming year.

Are there any of these traditions you would like to try for ringing in 2025? Visit our Facebook page and share your favorite New Year’s traditions with us.
