The Martini is a True Classic

Did you know that today, June 19th is recognized as National Martini Day? Originally the cocktail was called The Martinez, after the town of Martinez, California. Invented around the mid- 1800’s during the California Gold Rush. One legend goes, a miner had struck it rich and wanted to celebrate with champagne. The bar did not have a bottle on hand, instead, the bartender suggested creating a new cocktail with gin, vermouth, maraschino liqueur, bitters, and a slice of lemon. The new cocktail became so popular that it was eventually included in Jerry Thomas’s 1887 edition of the Bartender’s Manual under The Martinez moniker. The Martinez was altered over the years and became the martini we all know today, made with gin and vermouth with an olive or lemon twist for garnish. Whether you love your martini dry, dirty, shaken or stirred, enjoy sipping on this iconic cocktail and celebrating National Martini Day. Take a stroll into the past by crafting a classic Martinez cocktail by following the recipe below.

June is National Dairy Month

Here’s a quick history lesson to kick off National Dairy Month. The first U.S. patent for the milk bottle was submitted in 1884. By 1889, glass milk bottles were the standard due to their more sanitary nature. Because refrigeration was not in every household, milk was delivered and distributed daily door to door by a milk man. Straus Family Creamery, located in the small Northern California town of Marshall, continues the tradition of bottling their organic milk in glass bottles. The typical Straus glass milk bottle is returned to the creamery to be washed and sanitized and used again up to five times before being recycled. This effectively cuts down the total waste from dairy farm to dinner table. All Straus Family Creamery milk is non-homogenized, meaning that the cream naturally rises to the top giving the milk a fuller, richer flavor. Stop by Bianchini’s today to find Straus Family Creamery’s organic milk in glass bottles.

mystic cheese melinda may bloomy rind soft cheese05/29/2023

Have you Heard About Melinda Mae?

This is the final week of American Artisan Cheese Month, and to round out the occasion we are highlighting Melinda Mae from Mystic Cheese Company from Groton, Connecticut. Borrowing its name from the Shel Silverstein poem, Melinda Mae is a soft-ripened pale cheese that’s pillowy soft and smooth, similar to a brie. The edible bloomy rind has an almost button mushroom flavor that gives way to notes of sour cream and sweet cultured butter with a bright, lemony tang finish. Try pairing Melinda Mae with a fruity jam or honey to enhance the already delightful flavors of this soft cheese.
