Dark, Leafy Kale

Kale has been a part of the human diet for centuries. Kale’s origins date back to 2000 B.C. when it was cultivated in Asia Minor and the Eastern Mediterranean. With historical records showing that curly leaf and flat leaf cabbage variations were a part of Greek diets in 400 B.C. and is believed to be a predecessor of what we call kale today. The Romans called these cabbages Sabellian kale. Often considered a super food due to its abundance of natural plant protein, rich iron content and high amount of vitamins A and C. Kale is also a good source of fiber, carotenoids, manganese, folate, and vitamins B6, C, and K. Studies have shown that consuming kale may help manage blood pressure and boost digestive health. So, the next time you’re making a smoothie or shake a handful for a natural nutrient boost, switch out lettuce for kale in your afternoon salad or make bite-size kale chips as a healthy snack! Look through our kale recipe collection to find some deliciously wholesome dishes.

The Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet

If you’re looking for a diet to begin for the New Year, consider The Mediterranean Diet. It’s delicious, heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly, and the winner for the sixth year in a row for Best Overall Diet. What sets the Mediterranean diet apart from other diets is that it isn’t a whole lifestyle change, it’s not about food groups but food quality. The Mediterranean Diet focuses primarily on plant-based foods: whole grains, nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables. With an emphasis on lean meats like poultry and fish, over red meats. And seasoning foods with herbs and spices in lieu of salt. Lastly, the Mediterranean diet has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers, such as breast, colon and prostate. Are you ready to start the Mediterranean Diet? Let Bianchini’s help get you started, we carry a large assortment of Mediterranean Diet related foods, that are fresh, ready to cook and enjoy today.

Countdown to 2024

Do you or your family have any fun traditions to ring in the New Year? Like, toasting with a glass of bubbly champagne or preparing a special meal to share with your family and friends. Here are a few unique traditions from around the world that we think are especially fun celebrate.

1)  Spain has a tradition of eating 12 grapes during the 12 strokes of midnight are said to welcome in good luck and bring prosperity for the New Year.

2)  Germany and parts of Eastern Europe serve cabbage, in the form of coleslaw and sauerkraut, with their New Year’s meals. The long strands of cabbage are said to symbolize a long life, while cabbage itself symbolizes money and prosperity.

3)  Many countries in Asia follow a tradition of eating long noodles on New Year’s Day. The long noodles are said to lengthen one’s life.

4)  In Greece, families come together to bake a vasilopita, a New Year’s Day cake, that is baked with a coin hidden inside. The cake is cut at midnight, and the person who finds the coin in their slice is said to have good luck for the year.

5)  In the Southern United States, black-eyed peas served on a bed of collard greens are a customary dish to serve with a New Year’s supper. The two foods served together are said to represent prosperity and wealth for the coming year.
